National Steel Institute

Biju Pattnaik National Steel Institute (BPNSI) was established on 1st January 2002 to develop trained manpower ,fully geared to handle the technology required  for primary and secondary steel making industries .The goal is to help modernize the Indian steel industry which contributes significantly to industrial production and consumption (0.7% of GDP, 10 % of excess collection.)

The Institute aims at transferring industrial practices of metallurgical applications to new industrial  set-ups and providing structured knowledge and industrial consultancy on process  re-engineering ,energy conservation and pollution control .It lays significant emphasis on the use of the latest computer technology to help attain its aims in this regard.

The Institute is a Central Government Society setup by the Ministry of Steel and has been conceptualized on the  lines of the IIMs and IITs .The faculty and students are selected and screened in a manner to suit to this  objective .In order for the Institute to live up to expectations, a team of excellent and experienced teaching staff have been recruited to educate the students for direct entry in to the industry.

In order to start the courses in the year 2002, the Institute started operation from a 3 – acre facility on the Puri Beach .At present, the Institute provides four non-conventional courses, such as , steel technology ,computer software, computer maintenance and welding fabrication .Later  on, efforts will be made to encompass the many divergent fields of steel technology .BPNSI is receiving active help and support from the Government .The steel Ministry has expanded extensive financial support from the Steel Development Fund to fund the Institute – starting from land acquisition to building construction and purchase of ecquipment . To bridge the dearth of trained steel shop technicians , BPNSI has started a number of  training programmes with the aim to help the ailing Indian Steel Industry to compete and prosper in the technologically global environment.
